The best mouse jiggler for working from home
Working from home means your computer's idle and sleep settings suddenly matter. A screen that dims mid-read, a chat status that flips to "away" while you're on a phone call, a machine that sleeps during a long download โ a mouse jiggler solves all of these. But "best" depends on your setup. Here's how to choose.
First, figure out what you actually need
- Just stop the screen sleeping while I read/watch? You don't need a jiggler at all โ a browser keep-awake tool is enough.
- Keep my status active / defeat idle detection? A free software jiggler with randomized movement.
- On a locked-down work laptop that blocks installs? A USB hardware jiggler.
The free option: software (best for most people)
If you're on your own computer or a lightly-managed one, a free software jiggler is the obvious starting point. Look for these qualities:
- Randomized movement. Fixed, perfectly-timed jiggles are easy to spot and can look robotic. Randomized timing and distance behave more like a real hand. (Our free jiggler does exactly this.)
- An easy on/off control. You want to pause it instantly when you're actually using the mouse.
- Small, unobtrusive motion. Tiny nudges that reset the idle timer without dragging your cursor across the screen.
- No install / no bloat. A single lightweight app you can delete anytime.
Start here: the homepage tool and free Windows download cover both the browser keep-awake case and real mouse movement.
The paid option: hardware (best for locked-down laptops)
If your employer's laptop blocks unapped software, or you want something that leaves no trace on the PC, a USB hardware jiggler is the answer. When shopping, look for:
- "No software / plug-and-play" โ it should work the moment you plug it in.
- Adjustable interval or an on/off switch โ control over how often it moves.
- A discreet form factor โ many are the size of a small USB stick.
- Good recent reviews โ this is a cheap-commodity category, so buy something with a solid rating and real review count.
Types worth considering
The most popular pick โ plug in, no software, ~$12โ18. Best all-rounder for WFH.
Physically moves your own mouse; connects to nothing. ~$15โ25. Most "hands-off."
What you don't need to pay for
This is a cheap category. Premium "enterprise" jigglers exist for $30+, but for a normal home setup there's rarely a reason to spend more than $20. And if you're on your own machine, you may not need to spend anything at all โ the free software route works for the majority of people.
Our recommendation
- Try free first. Use the browser keep-awake tool or the free download. For most WFH situations, that's the end of the story.
- Upgrade to a USB dongle only if you have to โ a blocked laptop or a monitoring setup you're genuinely concerned about. A ~$15 dongle covers it.
